How can I release air from the electric pump myself?

When the machine has "run empty“, there might be air in the electric pump. In this case, you should release air from the pump by removing the water tank from the machine. Next, close the connection in the tank shaft (underneath the tank) with your thumb. Now let the pump work until you feel a vacuum. After that, put the water tank back into the machine again.
